Our Town's Rich History
From Rural Origins to a Thriving Community
Gibson, initially part of Richmond County, North Carolina, traces its roots to 1846 when a post office was established, named after its first postmaster, Noah Gibson. The town’s transformation began in 1884 with the arrival of the Raleigh and Augusta Air Line Railroad, which connected Gibson to broader markets. This development saw the construction of a depot, hotel, academy, and stores. In 1891, the Charleston, Sumter, and Northern Railroad linked to Gibson. The town later became part of Scotland County in 1899 and was officially incorporated. Over the years, Gibson saw economic growth with the establishment of a bank in 1904 and community involvement through the Ruritan Club in 1946. Today, we preserve our heritage by restoring the historic rail depot into a community center, keeping our history alive.

Gibson’s journey from a rural outpost to a thriving community showcases our resilience and sense of community spirit. As we embrace our rich history, we also look forward to a bright future. Join us in Gibson, where tradition meets progress, and experience the unique blend of small-town charm and growth that defines our town. We invite you to be a part of our story, as we continue to shape our shared destiny in the Town of Gibson.
